The self-titled debut album by New York City's the sours
offers eleven original songs that range from cutting, slice-of-life observations, to raw, diaristic confessions. This acoustic project is the brainschild of singer/songwriter Sarah Schrift, joined by producer and guitarist Sasha Markovic (of Yagull
) and special guest, pianist Kana Kamitsubo. Weaving through an amalgam of styles and textures, the artists create a rich, undulating sonic tapestry.
The music is honest and straightforward, like the artist, herself. (... which is also reflected in the album's artwork, another side of Sarah's artistic expression; her work has been shown in international art galleries, as well as major motion pictures.)
From the uplifting to the morose, the sours hold nothing back, even injecting a little humor into the equation. Drawing inspiration from a variety of sources -- broadly ranging in spectrum from Joni Mitchell, to Amy Winehouse, to Nick Drake and others -- the sours' music utilizes economy, touch and emotion to carry listeners on a unique musical journey.
