Duos are a perilous exercise, requiring exceptional qualities: spontaneity, inventiveness, and an ability to truly listen and react instinctively. The best duets are usually the ones where a special musical "cohesive bond" has developed between the musicians, enabling them to seem to communicate telepathically on their instruments with one another. Such is the case with the late Elton Dean and Mark Hewins, on the initial MoonJune Records release, Bar Torque.

Elton and Mark first met at the start of the eighties, when Mark became part of drummer John Stevens' Dance Orchestra. A unique musical camaraderie quickly developed, when Mark joined Elton in Soft Heap, following Alan Gowen's death in 1981. The two often opened a set performing just as a duo, before John Greaves and Pip Pyle would rejoin them onstage for the full quartet performance.

Bar Torque is a modern-day free jazz classic that documents their incredible creative chemistry.
